For the past two decades, Mok Eng Lan, 61, has been a taxi driver with SMRT Taxis. A habitual night owl, she drives shifts starting from 7pm till around 3am or 4am. Then the Covid-19 outbreak happened, and in March this year, she had to make a tough decision. Her family, concerned that she might be exposed to the coronavirus, had urged her to stop driving temporarily.

Other than her own health, there was much more at stake. Her husband, a kidney patient, has weakened immunity from his condition, while her son, who stays with her, has two vulnerable young kids. Speaking to 8days.sg, Eng Lan’s daughter, Jesling Ang, 44, explains, “It’s a big risk with her out there meeting so many people. So we spoke to her to stop driving, till the current situation improves.”
