Bugis Eatery Sells ‘Shanghai-Inspired’ Crab Roe Noodles For $14.90

It’s hairy crab season and while savouring the petite whole crustaceans for its prized roe isn’t unheard of in Singapore — the Chinese delicacy is mostly found in high-end restaurants here.

Even then, because of its limited quantity from freshwater rivers and lakes in Eastern China, noodles carpeted with said crab roe is rare in Singapore. This speciality dish is especially popular in Shanghai and Hangzhou, and a bowl of noodles heaving with sweet roe or milt can cost anywhere between $30 to $60 there.

Well, there’s now a far more economical version of it in Singapore. QQ Noodle House is selling their rendition of the dish for just $14.90. When we say rendition, let us add that it’s loosely inspired by the original dish.

The standalone eatery at Victoria Street in Bugis and has been serving various noodle dishes like Sarawak kolo mee since 2007. The owner, Malaysian-born Singapore PR Chua Wen Foo, 48, tells 8days.sg he added crab roe noodles to the menu after trying the dish while on vacation in Shanghai. “When I was in Shanghai, I felt the appearance of the dish was quite appealing, but flavour-wise, some of my [Singaporean] friends found it a bit fishy, so I tweaked it to suit local taste buds,” he says. We’re not sure which eateries in Shanghai they’ve tried, ‘cos good quality crab roe noodles there are meant to be sweet, creamy and umami with no fishy flavour.
