Ah, the humble sausage bun – Singaporeans’ go-to for a fast, convenient breakfast or lunch. It’s so ubiquitous, it can sometimes be a blind spot. (In fact, a customer stopped us at Swee Heng when we were buying one for this story. “Where did you get that? I can’t find it!” he said.)
But make no mistake – despite its plain curves and pedestrian hero ingredient, this Asian bakery classic consistently outsells trays of more flamboyant options stuffed with trendier fillings. In a 2022 CNA study of Singaporeans’ all-time favourite bun flavours, sausage buns ranked third, just behind floss and red bean buns. Interestingly, the programme Talking Point also found that they were the healthiest of the lot, with the lowest calorie and sugar content.
