Battle Of The Hot Dog Joints

Frank and Be Frank are two gourmet hot dog joints with similar names and grub. But which one is better? Read on.

Battle Of The Hot Dog Joints

Brought to you by the folks behind German restaurant chain Brotzeit, this three-month-old concept is about elevated fast food. The self-service, al fresco enclave in the CBD takes the classic bun, sausage and beer combination to new culinary levels by giving the humble hot dog a gourmet Asian-inspired makeover. The sausages are custom-made using Frank’s own recipes at a local butchery. They’re of the German variety, and are slimmer and longer. The seasoned meat is encased in good ol’ pig’s intestines, so you don’t get the crunchy snap that artificial casings give. The bread — five types including French baguettes and rolls — are specially baked by local bakery Antoinette and artfully matched with different sausages for 20 options. Frank also serves German beers like the Löwenbräu Lager ($10 for 500ml).

Everyone loves hot dogs. There’s just something so comforting about wolfing down salty tubes of springy meat wrapped in fluffy buns. Plus, they make a no-frills, fast and easy-to-eat meal… usually, that is. The two similarly named but differently run vendors featured here have bucked the trend and upped the hot dog game. We suss out who’s top dog between them (our verdict is in slide #14).
