While many folks start home-based food businesses during the pandemic for various reasons, Agnes Lee’s decision to set up Ally’s Gourmet came after years of struggling to regain her mobility. The former make-up trainer and avid marathon runner, 50, had suddenly suffered a stroke in 2017 despite her active lifestyle. “It was a shock to all in my family, as I had always been strong and fit,” she tells 8days.sg.

She spent a few years recuperating till late 2020, when she felt well enough to start making and selling savoury yam and carrot cake plus Basque burnt cheesecakes from home. Though Agnes still cannot travel outside of her HDB flat on her own, her business helps to supplement her household income and ongoing medical costs (her husband works as a sales manager at a window tinting company).
