$6.50 Crab Omelette Rice Found At Cute Thai Food Kiosk In HDB Estate
Amid a row of mom-and-pop shops beneath a HDB block in Ubi, Poppy Thai Food Mart stands out with its kawaii signboard decorated with cutesy mascots. The cartoon drawing of a lass is of the store’s chirpy Thai owner (she declines to be named for this story), who mans the joint with her Singaporean husband and two staff.
Though branded as a ‘food mart’, it is more of a takeaway Thai food kiosk. It boasts a rather affordable menu - the highlight is the $6.50 Crab Lava Egg Rice, which happens to be the most expensive dish here. But crab meat Thai-style omelette rice for $6.50? Seems like a pretty good deal to us.

$6.50 Crab Lava Egg Rice with real crab meat
Poppy Thai’s lava egg rice features a sort of scrambled egg-omelette hybrid draped over a mound of rice. The ‘lava’ here supposedly refers to the creamy egg, though from Google review photos online, it sometimes looks oozy but dry occasionally.
It is topped with a few chunks of frozen crab meat.
Compared to other popular Thai eateries like Flying Pig at City Gate, which serves their popular crab omelette rice for $10, or Baan Kanom Thai (which we previously reviewed), which sells their version for $12, the $6.50 lava egg rice here is a lot cheaper. Of course, the crab quantity and quality might differ since we didn’t do a taste test comparison. While there is no dining in here, we hear that Poppy Thai will soon open another outlet at a canteen in Kaki Bukit where you can sit comfortably and eat.
Wallet-friendly Thai food
The rest of Poppy Thai’s menu is equally easy on the pocket. Other classic Thai mains sold here include Basil Pork Rice ($4.50), and Tom Yum Soup or Green Curry Chicken for $4.50. Desserts like Mango Sticky Rice ($5.50), Thai Cendol ($2.50) and Red Ruby ($2.50) are also available, and a Thai Milk Tea will only set you back $2.
