This pretty 25-seat café in CHIJMES is contained in, literally, a glasshouse, complete with streams of natural light and plenty of plants. It offers a rotating line-up of coffee from specialty coffee roasters, accompanied by open-faced sourdough toast featuring bread from Woodlands Sourdough. There’re both espresso-based and filtered coffee from Singapore-based roasters here, like Common Man Coffee and Cata Coffee. Try the espresso-based Flat White ($4), or the hand-dripped Filter Coffee ($7). Choose from five types of toppings for your sourdough, including Cured Salmon ($8) with herbed cream cheese, radish and dill.

All The Batter
All The Batter already exists as a takeaway dessert kiosk in Anchorpoint mall. But you can now relax at its new 30-seat bakery-cum-café beside Thomson Plaza. However, it is only open on weekends (it operates as a production kitchen on weekdays). The cafe aims to make life all the batter (better, geddit?) by serving healthier desserts featuring the avocado. The hipster super food is known for being a good source of monounsaturated fats, which are good fats that purportedly help improve heart health. Signature offerings include the Avocado Citrus Pie ($4.80) and the Avocado Rhapsody Slice ($6.50; pictured), an avocado chocolate sponge cake with avocado cream cheese frosting.
17 Jasmine Rd, Adelphi Park, S576585. Tel: 8510-6313. Open Sat & Sun 11am-9.30pm. Last orders at 9.30pm. www.allthebatter.com

13 Stages
This self-service eatery is opened by comedian Mark Lee. The 40-seater serves various styles of chicken with rice and 13 types of coffee sourced from the 13 states of Malaysia. Each serving of chicken rice comes with a chicken leg served in a bamboo basket. Options include Samsui, Danggui (a type of Chinese herb) and Curry Chicken (all $8.90 each). The Samsui chicken is topped with minced ginger and spices, and served with chicken-flavoured rice and soup. Sip some Kelantan Kopi, featuring coffee beans roasted with margarine, salt and sugar over wood fire, as is usually done in the Malaysian state.
The one-Michelin-starred Japanese establishment from Osaka has opened its first overseas outpost in Singapore. It specialises in kushikatsu, which are skewers of meat, seafood and vegetables covered with Japanese breadcrumbs and egg and deep-fried in a mix of lard and sunflower oil. Here, it is served omakase-style: the entry-level menu is the Omakase Skewers ($134), with 20 sticks. Highlights include the tender wagyu beef and salmon with pickled chrysanthemum, which has a pleasant floral flavour. Dip them into six house-made sauces, like a fragrant red wine one. On a budget? Kushiage Sampler Plates (from $25.50) with three to eight types of skewers are also available at the elegant eight-seat bar.
