This hilariously named (jin ho mia means ‘a really good life’ in Hokkien) eatery is by the folks behind Thai hotpot place Soi Thai Soi Nice. It offers hearty rice bowls such as Sweet and Sour Chicken Bowl ($13.80) by day (weekdays only) and hotpots by night (all day on weekends). There are three types of hotpot, including the Tok Kong Pot (pictured) which means ‘out of this world’ in Hokkien ($48.80, serves two), with half an Alaskan King Crab, Tiger Prawns and Clams. Choose from soups such as Tomato, Fish or the interesting Cheese broth.

An affordable Thai barbecue and hotpot coffeeshop joint opened by actors Chew Chor Meng and Dennis Chew. A platter for two starts from $26, while a platter for four starts from $45. The set for two comes with 14 items, including Marinated Chicken Thigh, Tiger Prawns and Mussels. Pork lard is provided to flavour and grease your barbecue grill, while soup for the hotpot portion is chicken broth. Last orders are close to midnight on weekdays and nearly 2am on weekends — great for supper and perhaps a spot of star spotting?

Halal prawn mee, anyone? Instead of using the pork bones typically included in prawn mee stock, the chef-owner here, a Chinese lady who converted to Islam after marrying her Malay husband, uses anchovies and dried shrimp on top of the usual fresh prawn shells and heads to simmer her soup. A basic bowl is the Regular Prawn Noodles ($3.50), which comes with three grey prawns. There's also the more luxe Prawn Noodles with Crayfish ($12.50), featuring three prawns and two whole crayfish. All the noodles here are served with soup — there aren’t any dry versions.

This casual joint by the Unlisted Collection serves kushikatsu (Japanese breaded skewered meat and vegetables). For lunch, there’s value-for-money rice bowls such as the Kaisen Bara Chirashi Don ($18), with diced salmon and ikura on warm rice. All lunch sets come with about three sticks of assorted kushikatsu, soup and dessert. For dinner, the signature Panko Course ($88) is a more decadent affair, with 12 skewers of meat and vegetables — including wagyu — covered in Japanese breadcrumbs and deep-fried till crisp. But we suggest you just go a la carte with cheaper, lighter options, like this Salmon Kushikatsu ($5).
