McDonald’s Singapore launched an adorable $12.90 Pikachu carrier yesterday (Sept 8), and it’s proving to be a surprisingly versatile item. While netizens pointed out that their Hello Kitty and My Melody carriers from earlier launches are languishing at home as white elephants these days (they were made to hold fries and a drink), the Pokémon version is relatively more useful. The carrier is now sold out at all McDonald’s outlets islandwide.

Pikachu, I choose you!
Unlike its predecessors, the Pikachu carrier is not an open-top holder. It is more like a plastic container that comes with a strap and a hinged lid which you can pull open to reveal a hollow body, so you can even use it as a bag for your essentials.

You can make it into a Mid-Autumn Festival lantern too
Resourceful netizens have also repurposed their Pikachu carriers into night lights and lanterns, just in time for the Mid-Autumn Festival tomorrow (Sept 10). All you have to do is to find a portable light source and place it inside the carrier.
For obvious reasons, don’t put an open flame like a tealight in the plastic Pikachu, or you will find yourself having to subdue a Fire-type Pokémon. 8days.sg tries out four light hacks and tells you which one works the best.

Mobile phone flashlight
The most convenient source of light would be your mobile phone’s flashlight, so you can just use the Pikachu carrier to hold your phone. However, we find that the lone ray of light emitting from our phone is not enough to light up the whole Pikachu; the electric critter has either a lit-up head or body depending on where we position our phone.

Selfie ring light
A selfie ring light for mobile phones is a pretty lightweight and efficient way of lighting up the whole Pikachu. Use it if you have one.

LED light bank
For those who are into photography and own an LED light bank, this hack will make your Pikachu glow like it’s launching a Thunderbolt attack. Very good for those who want to take ‘gram-worthy photos of their Pikachu carriers, but it’s pretty heavy to carry around in the flimsy plastic carrier.

Portable night light
We got this nifty rechargeable night light online, and it turned out to be the best lighting source to make a Pikachu lantern. It is lightweight, brighter than a selfie ring light, has a strong source of light and no pesky cables to grapple with.
