3 New Ice Cream Joints To Check Out

Froroll is a funky ice cream dessert café opened by Campus Superstar alum Keely Wee. There are two sections to the menu: ‘Back to Basics’ and ‘Extravaganza’. The former is inspired by old-school ice cream served in rainbow-coloured bread, and features ice cream rolls (liquid ice cream mix poured onto frozen plates, and scraped to form rolls) served in hotdog buns topped with house-baked dessert bars and cookies. There are five combinations to choose from, such as Rainbow Fantasy ($10.80; pictured), comprising mango, strawberry and blueberry ice cream rolls, a rainbow cake with meringue kisses, topped with rainbow sprinkles, a white chocolate butter cookie, and strawberry and mango sauce. Sugar overload!

Froroll's ‘Extravaganza’ menu offers fancier desserts. Such as this Volcanic Avalanche ($15.80), a raspberry molten lava cake and vanilla ice cream hidden within a volcano-shaped dark chocolate shell, surrounded by Florentine cookie 'rocks'. It even comes with liquid nitrogen smoking dramatically from within the ‘volcano’.

Licktionary is a chic 22-seat ice cream parlour within new restaurant enclave Savourworld. It serves house-made artisanal ice creams with a mix of local and western flavours. The flavours are created based on the owners’ (a couple who works in advertising) interpretation of a specific word, hence the shop’s name which combines the words ‘lick’ and ‘dictionary’. For instance, ‘Kampung’ reminds them of coconut, gula melaka and pandan, so that’s why those ingredients are incorporated into a scoop of, er, ‘Kampung’. There’s also ‘Luck’, a frozen version of pineapple tarts with pineapple, cinnamon and cookie bits. Prices start from $3.80 a scoop and come in a cup or a cone (extra 50 cents).

This takeaway dessert stand in Sembawang offers ice cream that’s made in-house in small batches with reduced sugar and no preservatives. Premium ingredients like Valrhona chocolate and Cha Tra Mue tea leaves from Thailand are used in some of their ice creams. Waffle cones (80 cents each) here are freshly made on the spot, using traditional waffle moulds, and include both original and charcoal flavours. There are 12 varieties of ice cream ($3.50 a single scoop; $6.50 for double), such as Thai Milk Tea, Lychee Rose, Chocolate Truffle, and a boozy Tiramisu.
