Chilli Pan Mee (Batu Rd)
Opened: March 21
What To Expect: From across the Causeway comes this chilli pan mee eatery, replacing its now-defunct Malaysian competitors Kin Kin Chilli Pan Mee at MacPherson and Face to Face Noodle House at City Square Mall. Pan mee simply means ‘ban mian’ (flattish, doughy Hakka-style handmade noodles). This family-owned chain, known as Super Kitchen Chilli Pan Mee in Malaysia, opened 13 years ago and has 11 outlets in Malaysia. Batu Road in KL is the location of their first ever outlet. The Singapore branch, a more glam, air-conditioned outlet at Far East Square, offers three types of handmade noodles, made on-site, served six ways. The chef here is the son of the founder, who were trained in Malaysian kitchen. The famous Chilli Pan Mee ‘Dry’ ($7.80) comes with ban mian, fried anchovies, minced pork, fried shallots, a poached egg, and their signature dry chilli, which is made daily. For something soupy, there’s the Mee Hoon Kueh ‘Soup’ ($7.80), featuring broad flat noodles, shredded mushroom, minced pork meat, fried anchovies, fried shallots, and poached egg in an anchovy soup boiled with sweet potato leaves. Not a fan of chilli? Go for the Pork Chop Dai Pu Mee ‘Dry’, ($7.80) which comes with the springy egg-flavoured skinny noodles, deep-fried pork chop, minced pork, all mixed with a black-soy based sauce. Chilli Pan Mee also serves side dishes like Deep Fried Dumplings ($4.80).
