Sip "Steampunk" Tea, Makan and Shop At This New Lifestyle Enclave

Don't let Steamroom with The Pillar and Stones' unsexy name put you off — it really is quite a hip hang-out.

We don't blame you if you can't remember this new lifestyle enclave's name: Steamroom with The Pillar and Stones. Just call it SRPS, and think of it as three concepts housed in one space: Steamroom (a tea salon where cuppas are made in a cool steampunk machine which brews the tea to an optimum temperature), Pillar (a mod Asian-Western restaurant) and Stones (a retail shop-cum-art lab where art workshops will be held). It’s owned by local artist Wong Lip Chin. At Pillar, there are fusion dishes like Salmon Ochazuke ($24), where you pour a teapot full of smoked tea dashi broth over rice topped with seared Norwegian salmon and roe. The menu is conceptualised by Austrian chef Stephan Zoisl, who also runs the mod European restaurant Chef’s Table on Tras Street. Post-meal, stroll over to the Steamroom, which offers coffee and 11 types of Chinese teas including Lapsang Souchong ($7.50 a pot).
