New Restaurant: Don Meijin

Spicy chilli crab tempura, anyone? (A version of this story first appeared in Issue 1373, Feb 6, 2017.)

This Japanese rice bowl joint occupies a stall at the Ramen Champion food enclave in Bugis. While it’s a local venture, it’s helmed by a Japanese head chef who has a decade’s worth of experience cooking at Japanese and French restaurants back home. The 14 types of donburi here come in mod flavours like Spicy Chilli Crab ($14.80), the ‘crab’ here comprising crab meat mixed with a spicy sauce and poured over tempura prawns, fish fillet and veggies like eggplant and asparagus.

Mille Feuille Katsu Don

There’s also a Roast Beef Don ($18.80) and an upcoming Mille Feuille Katsu Don ($12.80), featuring thinly sliced layers of pork loin coated in breadcrumbs.
