New Rainbow Cheese Toast Shop Kuma Brand Is Beary Cute
Natural food dyes are used to colour the cheese here.
While the rainbow cheese toast trend isn’t new (it first took social media by storm in countries like Hong Kong and Thailand about two years ago), there hasn’t been an eatery specialising in this cutesy, gooey snack in Singapore yet (besides the now-defunct Epicurious café). Beary pretty
Say hello to Kuma Brand, which opened at Westgate mall on August 9. It’s a rainbow cheese toast specialist with a cutesy bear for a mascot. Though the colourful toast cradled in a bear-shaped cardboard packaging sounds and looks Japanese, the brand really is from Malaysia. Besides rainbow toast, there're also single-coloured toast sets like charcoal cheese or matcha cheese, plus snacks such as cheese-filled fried chicken.
Kuma Brand
Kuma also has branches in Indonesia. Why the name? Well, the brand rep tells us it was inspired by the bear mascot of Japan's Kumamoto Prefecture (what he has to do with rainbow hued sarnies, we have no clue). And Kuma means “bear” in Japanese. The franchise was brought to Singapore by the same folks behind Original Cake castella cake shop, also at Westgate Mall.

Rainbow Cheese Sandwich, $6.90
Kuma’s super photogenic stretchy Rainbow Cheese Sandwich ($6.90) apparently achieves it multi-coloured hue using natural dyes derived from ingredients like the roselle flower, carrot juice, pandan juice, butterfly pea flower and sweet potatoes. It sure looks super pretty, but does it taste any good? Look out for our taste test soon.
