Before he became a hawker, Chew Zhi Jie was making a comfortable living working in a bank. The former personal loan executive at DBS, whose job was commission-based, earned a high salary. At the peak of his career, he was drawing as much as $100,000 a year. “I was doing loans and sales,” he tells 8days.sg. “I was also quite into investments, and I wanted to be an investment banker.”

But in 2016, three years into his bank job, Zhi Jie decided to leave the industry. He had been studying part-time for an economics and finance degree from Murdoch University while working, and juggling both had left him burnt out. “I started working right after I ORD [from NS], and I had enough of corporate life,” he says.
