The folks behind Chengdu-themed eateries Chengdu Restaurant and Taikoo Lane Hotpot in the Telok Ayer area have jumped on the grain bowl bandwagon. Their casual new delivery concept, Chengdu Bowl, offers 12 “poke-inspired” grain and noodle bowls created around classic Sichuan dishes like Suan Cai Yu (poached fish with picked mustard) and La Zi Ji (stir-fried chicken with dried chillies), with a healthier twist.

You won’t find any raw fish here, but they offer a pretty good selection of fiery and tongue-numbing mala dishes synonymous with the cuisine. Each hearty bowl comes with a carb base (rice noodles aka thick bee hoon, pearl rice or whole-grain brown rice), and loaded with a mix of six wholesome Sichuan- and Western-style sides like preserved long bean, fried egg, edamame and beetroot. They are available in three sizes, small ($10.60), regular ($12.80) and large ($14.90).

The idea for Chengdu Bowl sparked during the Circuit Breaker when Chengdu Restaurant offered ready-to-eat bowls of some of its popular dishes to reach out to more customers. The bowls, which are prepared at sister eatery Taikoo Lane Hotpot, were a hit and have become a mainstay for the business. We sample some of the bowls
