At 10pm on a recent Sunday night, the Hwangs are busy packing up at their two-week-old Korean baked sweet potato kiosk called Guma Guma at the basement of VivoCity. The usually bustling area is quiet; most of the surrounding stalls had already shuttered for the day. A giant, smiling sweet potato mascot adorning the shop’s facade catches our attention, and we decide to try our luck to see if we could get some sweet potatoes to gnaw on. “Can we still buy sweet potatoes?” we ask hopefully. “Welcome! How many would you like?” chirps the kiosk staff. After we place our order, we learn that the stall is personally run by a Korean family comprising patriarch Jeffrey Hwang, 50, his elegant wife Kim Eun Hee, 48, and their two teenage daughters Hye Lin and Ji Young Hwang, who are 19 and 16 respectively.
