Kit Kat’s Limited-Edition Bubur Cha Cha & Santa’s Gingerbread Men Bars: Nice Or Not?
We also try the prata and laksa ones.
When we first heard about Kit Kat’s premium Chocolatory limited-edition offerings for Christmas, including flavours like Roti Prata with Fish Curry, we weren’t exactly sold on the idea. But as they say: don’t knock it till you try it, so here we are.
Roti Prata With Fish Curry, $7.50
Although chocolate prata can be found at your usual kopitiam stall, we were apprehensive about mixing fish curry with choc. Who wouldn’t? The savoury milk chocolate wafer is decorated with two bits of puffed “prata pastry” which didn’t really taste like much but was at least light and airy, dried peas and dried tomatoes (which were also bland but nicely crunchy), and topped with what we assume is a fish curry-infused drizzle. Surprisingly, this choc bar is pretty decent with a pleasant, interesting whiff of curry fragrance. No signs of fish, though — whew. The drizzle tastes more of prata dough — the combo of sweet milk chocolate, mild spiciness and dough flavour kinda works. We’re mildly shocked we quite enjoyed this one.
Singapore Laksa, $7.50
Adorned with adorable mini egg and shrimp-shaped cookies, the Singapore Laksa Kit Kat is also topped with chunks of actual crunchy tau pok. The milk choc wafer has a strong, spicy, faintly coconutty aftertaste that reminded us disturbingly of milk choc fingers dipped in laksa gravy. Somehow, this doesn’t work as well as the prata with curry one.
Bubur Cha Cha, $7.50
This classic Nonya dessert Kit Kat comes with colourful little cookies shaped like yam and potato chunks atop a layer of coconut drizzle, and sprinkled with tiny amount of desiccated coconut. While we had high hopes for this number, it didn’t really taste like Bubur Cha Cha. We can only taste milk chocolate, with just a subtle hint of coconut from the frosting. Moreover the cookie bits are too sweet.
Santa’s Gingerbread Men, $7.50
Santa’s Gingerbread Men Kit Kat is prettied up with with mini individually handcrafted gingerbread men set atop a milk choc wafer drizzled with red and green sugar frosting. Super cute. It’s definitely festive-looking, but does it taste like gingerbread? Kind of. The drizzle and tiny cookies are imbued with a strong cinnamon-spiked gingerbread flavour, which is quite nice mixed with Kit Kat’s signature milk chocolate.
Verdict
Get the fun to eat Santa’s Gingerbread Men and surprisingly tasty Roti Prata With Fish Curry bars for Christmas gifting, skip the other two blah ones.
