At a time when F&B businesses are struggling to stay afloat, Ben Yeo has started not one, but three new concepts, albeit under one roof. The actor and his partners from his online chee cheong fun biz, Singapore Chee Cheong Fun (SGCCF), invested a low six-figure sum to open two stalls — izakaya-style food stall SG Umami and another one selling Korean fusion lok lok (this stall has yet to be named) — in a canteen within an industrial building in Kallang. At night, the 400-seater canteen transforms into a hip beer garden, which Ben, 42, also has a share in.

Called Playground, Ben likens the space to a “speakeasy canteen”. “During lunch, it is just like any other canteen catering to the office crowd. But at night, it has a totally different vibe. There is a nice al fresco corner at the side of the canteen, which we decorated to look like a garden for customers to hang out,” the entrepreneur tells 8days.sg.
