Think of Hawkerman as a one-stop destination for your favourite hawker grub. It features three popular brands under one roof: fried chicken chain Tenderfresh, Hokkien Mee stall Warong Kim’s (originally called Kim’s Fried Hokkien Mee), and Ah Boy Popiah (a spin-off of Good Chance Popiah). Actor and TV host Ben Yeo’s Tenderfresh Group is behind this stylo-mylo air-conditioned 75-seat restaurant where you order and pay at the counter and collect your food when it’s ready. A central kitchen, helmed by staff trained by the original hawkers, whips up all the food here.
What to makan? There’s the Lucky Set ($7.90) from Tenderfresh, featuring two pieces of fried chicken, fries and coleslaw. Or dig into a plate of La La Hokkien Mee ($9.90), with white clams, prawns, and squid. Hokkien mee “master” Tan Kue Kim (the famed long-sleeved shirt and Rolex-wearing hawker) is behind the dish. Ah Boy Popiah is the fourth-generation iteration of Good Chance Popiah, a popular DIY popiah eatery in Silat Ave. Try its signature Ah Boy Hokkien Popiah ($3.90) or Skinny Popiah ($4.90), the latter featuring crispy chicken skin and salted egg sauce. Thankfully, all the popiahs here are pre-assembled. If you’re craving grub from all three brands, go for the Bao Ka Liao ($32.90; feeds two) set, which means “including everything” in Hokkien. In it are seven types of dishes, including Tenderfresh’s Signature Fried Half Spring Chicken, Warong Kim’s Hokkien Mee, and Ah Boy’s Hokkien Popiah, plus a dessert of Citrus Plum Watermelon.
