1. Kueh Salat Mooncake

Think the flavours of the kaya and glutinous rice kueh salat, but with the textures of a mooncake. Yep, Peranakan mochi! Chewy snow skin mottled with the indigo juices of butterfly pea flowers envelopes a dollop of firm steamed kaya custard lightly infused with pandan juice, plus crunchy desiccated coconut, Shiok, though it’s sweeter than regular kueh so we could only manage a sliver.

Baked Pandan Jade Coconut Dodol
$15.80 each, The Pine Garden
While we like the core of soft, chewy coconut dodol (a sweet, toffee-like gula melaka and rice flour candy popular in Malaysia and Indonesia), it overwhelmed the surrounding pandan paste spotted with toasted white and black sesame seeds. We could barely taste the perfumey green leaves in this mooncake.

Cane Sugar-Free Spiral Flaky Skin Pandan Mooncake

If you ever wanted to eat a wholesome mooncake, this vegan number by healthy bakeshop Delcies has your name on it. Spiral pastry mooncakes are usually stuffed with yam and deep-fried, but not these. The flaky pastry is baked sans butter and eggs and the lotus paste filling made with diabetic-friendly sugar substitute maltitol sweetener, and spiked with fresh pandan juice.

Low Sugar Pandan Mooncake

A traditional baked mooncake featuring “low sugar” lotus paste blended with pandan. We like the firm crust and dense, creamy filling that’s quite fragrant with what seems like pandan essence (though the hotel says it uses pure juice). Plus, it’s indeed not too sweet, which we appreciate. Also, the sleek clear acrylic-topped box it’s packaged in makes this a stylo-mylo gift.

Low Sugar Pandan Paste With Single Yolk

Another lower-in-sugar option. These are classic baked mooncakes, but with lotus paste tinged with pandan essence and a briny salted egg yolk. We found the skin a tad thick and the filling a bit bland and weak on the pandan flavour.

Pandan with Gula Melaka Snow Skin Mooncake
$61 for four large pcs, The Fullerton Hotel
A signature mooncake from The Fullerton Hotel’s Cake Boutique. It features pandan juice-infused lotus paste sweetened with palm sugar. While we find the snow skin pleasantly soft and smooth, we think the filling could have had a bigger hit of fragrant pandan and gula melaka.
