5 Burning Questions About Asia's 50 Best Restaurants 2017 List

For starters: why are almost all of the nine restaurants from Singapore angmoh ones?

So, congrats to the nine restaurants from Singapore that made it to the Asia's 50 Best Restaurants 2017 list, announced in Bangkok last night. Predictably, Restaurant André by André Chiang snagged the No. 2 spot, up one place from last year. Meanwhile, Odette is also having a great run after recently winning two Michelin stars — it debuted on the list at No. 9, the highest new entry in the list’s five-year history. Yay for these guys, but as always, we have a few niggling questions:

Restaurant André by Andre Chiang is No. 2 and also the best restaurant in Singapore.

1. Joël Robuchon Restaurant Singapore was awarded a whopping three Michelin stars last year, yet, it’s nowhere to be seen on this list. Strange, no?

2. Speaking of French restaurants, why are almost all of the Singaporean restaurants on the list angmoh ones — serving French food, in particular? Where’s Candlenut, Wild Rocket (No. 38 last year) and the reliably delicious Imperial Treasure Fine Teochew Cuisine or Super Peking Duck?

3. Why is Tetsuya Wakuda’s stellar Waku Ghin always ranked so low on the list? It fell from No. 6 last year to No. 20 this year, far below Burnt Ends’ No. 10 (no offence, Dave Pynt).

4. Are the restaurants in Asian countries like Vietnam and Malaysia not at all worthy of a mention?

5. How is it possible that Tokyo’s revered temple to raw fish, Sushi Saito — winner of three Michelin stars and with a wait list that’s practically impossible to get on — ranked a mere No. 26 here?

Julien Royer's Odette made an impressive debut at No. 9, the highest position taken by a newcomer to the list.
