Nono may have just started a fried chicken cutlet craze in Singapore: the Taiwanese comedian, 48, was recently in town to launch the first local outlet for his Monga fried chicken chain. The takeaway kiosk opened on September 28 at the basement of Jem mall in Jurong and immediately spawned a massive queue — the brand’s fried chicken cutlets sold out in just a few hours.

“When I was launching Monga [in Taiwan five years ago], I sampled so many fried chicken cutlets that I even dreamt about eating fried chicken,” he tells 8days.sg. Prior to our one-on-one interview with No-ge, he had already been to No Signboard for his must-have meal of black pepper crabs.

His usual solemn, poker-faced demeanor becomes animated when he starts talking about food — he waxes lyrical about the intricate process of cooking good fried chicken (“Some people question why the waiting time at our stores is so long; we fry the chicken cutlets in small batches so that the temperature of the oil doesn’t fluctuate and affect the cutlets’ quality. You need to wait for good food!”), and his eyes turn misty as he reminisces about the best lu rou fan (braised pork rice) he has ever eaten.
