3 Cute Ice Cream Mooncakes To Cool Down With
Line Friends and Hello Kitty cuties you can lick.
This cutesy collab features characters from Line Friends, the popular cartoon figures based on the stickers from Japanese messaging app, Line. Haagen-Dazs’s range features four smallish ice cream mooncakes planted with the adorable mugs of Brown, Cony, Choco and Sally. They’re coated in crackly chocolate in flavours such as Pumpkin White Chocolate and Purple Potato White Chocolate. They contain these ice cream fillings: Macadamia Nut, Vanilla and Green Tea. Our fave is the Green Tea ice cream bunny one cloaked in a green tea white choc shell, ’cos we’re suckers for the earthiness of the brew. Our least fave: the Pumpkin White Chocolate paired with Macadamia ice cream — while the rich, nutty ice cream is yum, the choc shell is cloyingly sweet. Not cheap, but makes for an adorable gift.

Pink Passionfruit Punch and Butter Me Up, $33.80 for two pieces, Hello Kitty Orchid Garden
Good news for fans of the Japanese cat: the local Hello Kitty café has launched two new ice cream mooncake flavours this year: Pink Passionfruit Punch and Butter Me Up. The former is made with tangy, creamy passionfruit ice cream (though oddly, we tasted hints of mango) while Butter Me Up is a salted butterscotch ice cream with cookie crumble bits. Both petite pieces are wrapped in moderately soft snow skin stamped with the cat’s famous face. Also, did we mention they come in a collectible Hello Kitty-branded tin? Not bad, but not quite pretty enough to justify the price tag.

Mid-Autumn Collection, $39.80 for four large pieces, Swensen’s
When you don’t want to splurge on themed ice cream mooncakes, consider these no-frills ones by Swensen’s. However, the new flavours introduced this year are hit-or-miss. The Mao Shan Wang one wrapped in a charcoal snow skin is the best of the lot: the yellow ice cream filling is fairly potent and reminiscent of the thorny fruit. And the ‘Feel Good Passionfruit’ is fruity and refreshing enough. But we can’t say the same about the ‘Sedap Chempedak’ and ‘Wild Floral Honey Crumble’, both of which taste like sugary potpourri. Also, we’re not crazy about the thick, doughy snow skin. So stick to the durian and other classic flavours like Sticky Chewy Chocolate.
