While we can’t vouch for its quality as we haven’t tried it yet, a satisfied netizen posted this on FB hawker group Can Eat! Hawker Food: “$2.50 for this beautiful bowl of wtm, with succulent char siew and 3 wantons. Really can eat”.
$2.50 for soy sauce chicken rice all day
Besides cheap wanton mee or hor fun for breakfast, Wen Ge Charcoal Delights also serves Soy Sauce Chicken Rice all day, everyday, starting from a reasonable $2.50. If you’re not on a budget, well, splurge on the Charcoal-Roasted Duck ($38 whole), Roast Pork and Char Siew (both $43 per kg). For fans of tongue-numbing mala, try the Mala Special Noodle ($4.80), which comes topped with sio bak, lup cheong and char siew.
Wen Ge Charcoal Delights opened by Malaccan hawker
We spoke to the Malacca-born hawker behind the biz who wished to be known only as Alex. He ran a chicken rice ball shop in Malacca for two years before coming to Singapore, where he worked at the Yishun branch of Hua Zai Hong Kong Style Roasted Delight (another affordable roast meat specialist chain) for two years before setting up Wen Ge Charcoal Delights last year.
“We’re still making money, though not a lot [by selling certain dishes for $2.50]. Okay lah,” Alex explains when we ask if it’s profitable to sell grub at these prices. “We sell it so cheap to earn more by selling a greater volume,” he adds.
The six-month-old brand had a franchised outlet in Hougang Ave 3 that is now permanently closed, making the Bukit Merah one their only stall now.
