For those who missed the drama, pork leg rice hawker chain Shi Nian’s Gen-Z boss, Tommy Pang, 28, dropped a dramatic video over two weeks ago on social media. It revealed that the brand had burnt through half a million dollars in just six months after expanding to more than 30 outlets, and there are now 10 outlets left. In the vid, he promised to rebuild “the brand our customers once loved”.

Why spend more cash producing slick videos?

After all these losses, why spend more money producing videos?

“We film these videos ourselves because we want to document and show people the process of rebuilding Shi Nian,” Tommy explains. He also adds that he plans to win back trust by showing customers what exactly goes into a bowl of his pork leg rice, filming the entire painstaking process via another video. “We’re not worried that people will know how to [recreate] the dish, because even if I tell you everything, you still may not know how to do it,” he quips.

New set meals

Customers can expect new menu additions like the Signature Kway Chap Sets which feature a mix of braised favourites including pork belly, intestines, onsen eggs, and handmade prawn cake. All served alongside flat rice noodles in a herbal broth. Priced at $6.90 for solo eaters and $27.80 for 3 pax, the sets are available at only the Bugis, Eunos, and Chai Chee outlets.

Shi Nian has 10 outlets including #01-109 Albert Centre Market & Food Centre, 270 Queen St, S180270. More info via Facebook, Instagram, and website
