For 16 years, hawker David Lim has been serving excellent beef kway teow out of his Empress Place Teochew Beef Kway Teow stall in Siglap. His maternal family founded the famous Hock Lam Street Beef Kway Teow chain, which originated in the 1920s.

When David semi-retired in 2019, he handed his recipes over to his son John Paul and daughter Melissa, who ran their own spin-off stalls with David helping occasionally.

Melissa, a former secondary school teacher, helmed the Empress Place Teochew Beef Kway Teow brand after the stall moved from Siglap to Maxwell Food Centre, while John Paul opened his own business called Gubak Kia offering mod bowls with beef short ribs at the Timbre+ hawker centre.
