Popular Mui Siong Minced Meat Noodle Opens New Tampines Outlet & Reopens Sister Stall In Bukit Merah

The now-defunct original Mui Siong Minced Meat Noodle stall in Rochor Centre was helmed by matriarch Teo Yan Leng, who handed over her business to her seven kids in the ’90s. They opened a second branch in Redhill in 2007, splitting manpower between both branches. That’s also when the siblings decided to give both stalls unique names, with “Mui Siong” in brackets.

“That way we can both do our own style [in terms of cooking and pricing], but both using recipes that our mother created. It will also help us avoid any potential disputes in the future,” says hawker Justin Tan, who ran things with three other siblings at the Rochor Centre HQ until 2016, when they relocated it to the Veerasamy Rd kopitiam (Jin Xi Lai, Mui Siong Minced Meat Noodle).

Meanwhile, sisters Jasmine and Jennifer Tan managed the Rong Fa (Mui Siong) stall in Redhill with another sibling. It closed its doors after more than 14 years at E-Centre last July following an announcement on its Facebook page that “[they] and the café operator failed to reach a consensus on the increase in rent”. They’ve recently reopened at Maddox Canteen Bar in Bukit Merah Central, just a few minutes’ walk from their old premises.

Jin Xi Lai’s Tampines franchised outlet, despite being just three-months-old, might be closing temporarily soon as the food court it sits in will be renovated. The closure will happen around “end March to early April”, says Justin, for an estimated four weeks.

“This is what I heard. Whether there are extensions due to lack of manpower, I don’t know. But whether we stay there or change prices, this depends on whether the rental will change. The landlord hasn’t discussed it yet,” he adds.

A bowl of Minced Meat Noodle or Pork Liver starts from $5 at the Tampines stall.

Prices at Rong Fa (Bukit Merah branch) have inched up slightly since reopening in Bukit Merah Central – $0.50 more on average. A starter bowl of Minced Meat Noodle goes for $4.50, instead of $4. The Pork Liver (Dry/Soup) costs $5.50, or $6.50 for a larger bowl.

Prices have also recently been adjusted “in conjunction with the price increase from suppliers and utilities” at Jin Xi Lai (Veerasamy Rd branch) as well, says Justin. The Pork Liver (Dry/Soup) now starts from $5, instead of $4. The Minced Meat Noodle there still starts from $4, though.
