While some young hawkers have had to shut their fledgling stalls in light of rising operational costs and lukewarm crowds thanks to the pandemic, popular French-Japanese rice bowl joint Nice Rice by restaurant chef-turned-hawker Mandel Ban saw quite the boom in his business after 8days.sg reviewed his stall in a quiet kopitiam on French Road in Lavender.

“After 8 Days’ article [last December], it was crazy. The longest time someone had to wait was one-and-a-half hours,” says the boyish 25-year-old who’d cut his teeth at the now-defunct one-Michelin-starred French fine diner Vianney Massot Restaurant.

However, a surprise announcement on Nice Rice’s Facebook account reveals that the stall will be closing its doors until further notice on February 28. It isn’t goodbye forever though, as the stall will reopen at a new location (that Mandel has yet to find).
