Good news for fans of modern French-Japanese rice bowl hawker stall Nice Rice — it reopens today (April 1) at NTUC Foodfare food court at AMK Hub shopping mall. It was previously forced to relocate from its home on French Road three months after opening, when the kopitiam’s main tenant decided to close shop due to low footfall.

The reason for the move from a quiet kopitiam in Lavender to mall food court in Ang Mo Kio? “AMK Hub is bussin (slang for something that’s really good),” says Mandel Ban, the boyish 25-year-old hawker who previously worked as a chef de partie (line chef) at the now-defunct one-Michelin-starred French fine-diner Vianney Massot Restaurant before opening Nice Rice.

The stall specialises in fusion rice pilaf (an aromatic rice dish found throughout Europe and especially Lyon in France) bowls topped with torched salmon or steak. Its return comes with new menu items like a Honey Butter Fried Chicken rice bowl; along with slightly higher prices ($0.70 more per bowl) to match its new air-conditioned home.
