Nice Rice Relocates 2nd Time In 2 Years, Hawker “Not Concerned About Losing Customers” As His Food Is “Above Average”
“It may sound cocky, but I strongly believe in my food,” asserts the popular French restaurant chef-turned-hawker who relocated his Ang Mo Kio stall to the CBD.

Restaurant chef-turned-hawker Mandel Ban is hoping that the third location of his French-Japanese modern rice bowl stall, Nice Rice, will be a charm. Speaking to 8days.sg, the 27-year-old considers himself “lucky and unlucky at the same time” when asked about his stall’s second relocation in two years. “I feel lucky to be able to meet new customers in a different location, but also unlucky that we have to lose regulars.”
Nice Rice first opened in December 2021 at a quiet kopitiam in Lavender. After merely three months of operation, Mandel had to relocate due to the closure of the coffeeshop. The joint then found a new home at the NTUC Foodfare food court at AMK Hub in April 2022. However, in early July this year, the space started an extensive renovation projected to last about four months. Faced with the prolonged closure, the hawker opted not to renew his lease. Instead, he chose to set up shop in the bustling CBD – last week, Nice Rice reopened at China Square’s food court.

Grateful for wife’s support
The hawker, who got married last June, tells us that his wife Vanessa Quek, 27, has been a pillar of support. Vanessa, who’s a beautician, has been helping out daily at Nice Rice, “from taking orders to managing social media marketing”. “She’s actually facing [the bulk of] the stress as she’s the one who deals with the customers. Things wouldn’t be as smooth without her,” the hawker acknowledges sweetly.
Noodle concept in the works
While there are no plans to expand Nice Rice for now, Mandel and Vanessa have been developing a spin-off concept called Nice Noodle. “We’ve been doing some pop-ups and so far the feedback has been great,” he shares.
Mandel says Nice Noodle offers “dry ramen, served cold”. The noodles are paired with a sauce similar to what’s used in the flavourful rice base for their signature Nice Rice bowls, and topped with options like poached meat and torched salmon.
“We don’t have concrete plans to open a noodle stall yet. We’ll just do more Nice Noodle pop-ups on weekends to refine the concept,” he adds. Mandel also plans to offer his noodle dishes as limited specials at Nice Rice once business at the stall stabilises.
Nice Rice is at #01-10 China Square Food Centre, 51 Telok Ayer St, S048441. Open Mon to Fri 11am – 7pm & Sat 11am – 2pm. Closed on Sun. More info via Facebook and Instagram.
