Bendemeer’s Nan Rong Chee Cheong Fun Unexpectedly Reopens After Hawker’s Death
The longtime stall, which is famous for its cheap and good rice rolls, stopped operating last December after its 83-year-old hawker owner suddenly passed away.
One such shop is Nan Rong Chee Cheong Fun at Bendemeer Food Centre, a popular stall serving cheap and good breakfast fare like $1 cheong fun with red sauce, bak chang and yam cake.
Stall suddenly closed
Last December, Nan Rong’s regulars were shocked when they visited the stall only to find it closed. They later found out that the owner had unexpectedly passed away from a fall over the Christmas weekend. It was unknown whether the hawker's wife, who had been helping him, would continue operating the stall.
It has reopened
But good news for Nan Rong fans, as the stall reopened last week. In a post on Facebook foodie group Food We Eat N Share in SG, netizen Kenny spotted the stall in operation again, apparently manned by the late hawker uncle's relatives.
“Just now at Bendemeer HC and saw Nan Rong CCF reopened again and most likely Uncle relatives took over. It is a pity never try Uncle CCF before. If you there, do support the new owner [sic],” he wrote. Notably, the late hawker uncle’s wife was not spotted working at the stall.
The menu
It appeared from Kenny’s post that the reopened stall has a slightly trimmed down menu, and is not serving its popular yam cake and economic bee hoon for now. But there is still Chee Cheong Fun at $1 a roll, as well as Chestnut Dumpling ($2.50) and Nonya Dumpling ($2.50).
