JB Pushcart Sells Orh Luak Overflowing With Oysters, Order Via WhatsApp

JB Fried Oyster is a pushcart located in a narrow alley called Meldrum Walk that is walking distance from CIQ Checkpoint and the popular Johor Bahru City Square mall.

It specialises in only one dish: Orh luak, starch-thickened omelette topped with oysters.

Oyster overload

Like the recently viral ‘humful’ char kway teow sold at Telok Blangah hawker stall Liang Ji, JB Fried Oyster offers a version of its star dish that overflows with shellfish.

Priced at RM35 ($10.11) a plate, we counted around 30 plump oysters in the supersized oyster omelette. A regular portion with half the amount of oysters costs RM16 (S$4.16), with a top-up of oysters at RM19 (S$5.50).

Perhaps in response to customers’ enquiries, the pushcart’s Facebook page also repeats earnestly in its updates that the size of its oysters is “subjected to seasonal changes.”

Occasionally, it even includes serious, scientific-style timestamped size comparisons of oysters. Hilarious.

Chope your orh luak via WhatsApp

The pushcart is so popular that you have to pre-order your orh luak via WhatsApp (http://order.jboyster.com.my).

Here is how to chope your oyster omelette: Text the hawker the quantity you want, along with your collection date and time, and whether you want your orh luak spicy.

The pushcart operates only on Tuesdays (12.30pm-6pm) and Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays (12.30pm-6.30pm).

But check the stall’s Facebook page before you text to avoid disappointment; there will be updates in the posts’ comment section on whether pre-order slots for certain days are already full.

Bustling food street

Other than JB Fried Oyster, Meldrum Walk also houses other pushcarts that mainly operate at night. Don’t expect a spacious dine-in experience, though. Most of the pushcarts offer only squeezy ad-hoc tables. So plan your makan itinerary accordingly.
