24-Year-Old Sarawakian Helms New Charcoal-Roasted Herbal Duck Stall Opened By Legend Curry Rice Hawkers

Despite his tender age, Solomon Thian already has six years of experience as a roast meat hawker before he started working at Legend East Malaysia Charcoal Herbal Roast Duck King.

Legend East Malaysia Charcoal Herbal Roast Duck King is a mouthful of a name for a hawker stall, though it’s all relevant to what it sells – charcoal-roasted duck cooked by a young 24-year-old Sarawakian.

The month-old Yishun joint is opened by the two hawkers behind Legend Scissors Cut Curry Rice, (that stall with a distinctive cat signboard located in another nearby Yishun coffeeshop). Which explains why this roast duck stall has a feline-themed signboard too, as its owners once told 8days.sg that cats are lucky as “they have nine lives.”

The duo was also born in Sarawak, hence the Sarawak roast duck concept and “East Malaysia” nod in their stall name (barbecues are popular in the Malaysian state). One of the owners – Bong Chon Joon, 39 – has fine-dining cred, having worked as a demi chef at defunct Spanish restaurant Santi. He partnered his pal Chai Chin Tek, who has 20 years of experience cooking at several cai png and Hainanese curry rice joints, to set up their stalls.
