It is pretty common for F&B businesses to display a banner at their shopfront advertising their wares. Malaysians who were passing by a hawker centre in Kuala Lumpur were intrigued by an attention-grabbing yellow banner with red font hung out front.

At first glance, the yellow banner looked like it was advertising something. Upon closer look, the banner informed people that “this banner is for blocking sun purpose & have a nice day”. And under that, the name of a popular tong shuishop “Hong Kee Dessert Kepong”.
The witty banner went viral online after Malaysian lifestyle portal 走咯我们吃喝旅行去 posted a photo of it, with around 1,000 shares.
Netizens were tickled by the playful trolling, though a commenter pointed out that it may be the shop’s way of circumventing a local law. Under Malaysian regulations, a permit is required for banner display.

The banner does advertise something
But folks who can read Chinese get a slightly different message from the banner, which also stated in Chinese: “Printed this banner just for blocking the sun, but we also take the opportunity to inform you that Hong Kee Dessert has opened.”

Almost 50 years old dessert shop
Hong Kee Dessert Kepong has been around for almost 50 years, and is very famous at its Jalan Ambong location in Kepong Baru. Although it also sells chicken wings, customers mainly flock to the hawker stall for its house-made old-school traditional tong shui like cheng tng, peach gum, sweet potato soup and almond tofu with longan.
It appeared that the yellow banner was hung up to promote Hong Kee's new outlet at Wah Yan Kai Restaurant in KL, which reposted the viral post on its own Facebook page with the cheeky caption: “Do you think this banner is big enough? We think it’s not big enough. Hope that everyone can come to our shop to see it for yourself and weigh in. See you tomorrow!”
