Those who like chai tow kway may have heard of He Zhong Carrot Cake at Bukit Timah Market & Food Centre. The popular stall, which has been around since the ’70s, is run by a father-and-daughter team.
But on Mar 27, netizen Wei Lian (transliterated from Chinese) noticed that the stall was closed. Pasted on the metal shutter was a handwritten sign.
It cheerily said in English: “Closed for sakura season. 27th March to 3rd April.” And in Chinese: “Cherry blossoms are in bloom! Off to admire flowers!”
As it is now peak sakura season in Japan, we presume that the family running the stall is heading for a well-deserved holiday there. Considering how hard hawkers work, we can sense their vacay excitement from the exclamation marks punctuating the notice. Very cute.
He Zhong Carrot Cake serves only white chai tow kway without dark soy sauce, yet it is still one-of-a-kind. It has the requisite chye poh (preserved radish bits) and radish cake (commonly called carrot cake in Singapore due to a literal Chinese translation) added to an omelette.
But He Zhong’s version boasts house-made radish cake cut into unusually thick cubes, and fried with beaten eggs so you get a plate piled with hefty discs of chai tow kway.
Compared to a typical plate of carrot cake which is usually more finely diced, with a thinner omelette, the thick, almost-fluffy chai tow kway here offers more bite. And considering that this hawker family operates their stall daily from 6am to 8pm (other than Wednesdays, which is till 1pm), we can see why they were so eager for a break.
He Zhong Carrot Cake is at #02-185 Bukit Timah Market & Food Centre, 51 Upper Bukit Timah Rd, S588215. Tel: 8498-9211. Open daily, Sat-Tues 6am-8pm, Wed 6am-1pm, Thur & Fri 6am-8.30pm.
