Gen Z Brothers Work As Wagyu Beef Butchers At Chinatown Wet Market, Nicknamed ‘Little Fresh Meat’

“Our stall neighbours said, ‘They are little fresh meat, they must be protected’,” laughed Marcus Tay, 28. Together with his 23-year-old brother Max, they are picking up the dying local trade of being first-gen pasar butchers.

Chinatown Complex has seen its occasional share of new blood — young hawkers giving entrepreneurship a shot by setting up shop at the building’s famous food centre. At the basement wet market, it’s a different scene. Aunties and uncles throng the stalls, pawing through fresh produce sold by vendors of similar age.
But two weeks ago, an unusual sight popped up at the meat section. Two chic Gen Z guys, dressed in black streetwear, hawking Japanese wagyu beef at their own stall called The BeefFellas.

Despite the dingy basement stuffiness, they aren’t wearing stained singlets. The idol-worthy lads don’t have a single strand of hair out of place, or even sweaty faces. They greet customers cheerfully with a smile, and patiently introduce their products to curious passers-by.

Meet (or should we say, meat) the new generation of wet market butchers.
