On Apr 16, fast food chain Texas Chicken got into a fowl situation when it ran a promotion giving out chicken-shaped bags to customers. The cute plushie bag was a freebie with purchase of the chain’s 13th anniversary combo deals, which were priced at $13.90 for two sets.
Response was overwhelming, with queues forming at Texas Chicken’s outlets. Customers waited for as long as five hours to get the bag, though feathers were ruffled at the Century Square outlet when the bags went out of stock. An irate customer confronted a staff member, who felt pressurised and burst into tears. The incident was captured on video by TikToker @usman26waw.

You can try your luck at getting a duck bag
If you missed out on getting a chicken bag, we suppose you can try your luck at getting a duck bag next week. On the stall’s Facebook page, Ah Xiao’s second-gen owner Bai Ruihai, 35, made a cheeky meta reference to the Texas Chicken promo. “First come first served, while stocks last! Limited stock available, don't make me stressed and cry ahhhh,” he wrote. So consider yourselves warned, folks.
Ruihai’s stall serves whole and chopped braised ducks, which you can get with rice, fish cake and other braised sides like pork belly, egg and tau kwa. A plate of braised duck rice starts from $4, while a whole braised duck costs $42.

“Do for fun only”
Speaking to 8days.sg, Ruihai quipped that he was only running this duck bag promotion as a gag. “Do for fun only. Sometimes we must have fun while doing business,” he laughed. “30 [bags] is a good number, because this is just for one day.”

He ordered a total of 60 wearable birds in two shipments from online fashion retailer Shein. Each bag cost him $7. “The bags are actually quite expensive as I’m running a small business and can’t buy them in bulk,” he shared.
To avoid disappointing customers, Ruihai emphasised that he had bought a very modest quantity (so you shouldn't bring your whole kampong to queue or even expect to get a duck bag, if you aren't fast enough).
The remaining 30 bags, he said, will be given out on another day as they are still en-route. “When the stocks arrive I will plan a date again,” he said. Or you can just enjoy your braised duck in peace and buy the bag online lah.
Duck bag giveaway is on Apr 30, from 10am, at Ah Xiao Teochew Braised Duck, #B1-43 Golden Mile Food Centre, 505 Beach Rd, S199583. Open daily except Mon & Thur. Tues, Wed & Fri 10am-2pm, Sat & Sun 10am-1pm. Updates on Facebook.
