After Weeks Of Denial, Beloved Beo Crescent Curry Rice Finally Confirms Closure

False closure rumours back in 2022

The heritage stall has been serving customers since 1988. It is owned by 79-year-old Pang Tao Chin and his wife, who only wants to be known as Madam Mo. Back in 2022, it closed briefly for a two-month renovation after false rumours that it may close down. Fast forward three years later, history seems to have repeated itself. Only this time, fans are facing the sad reality that the eatery has indeed shut down.

Coffee shop sold to new owners

News of the stall’s possible closure first surfaced late last month when Facebook users shared that the always crowded curry rice stall might shut down at the end of September, following the coffee shop’s sale to a new owner.

Talks with new kopitiam owner possibly didn’t work out 

On 21 September, the hawkers’ children addressed the speculation in a Facebook post. Although they did not confirm the eatery’s closure at the time, they stated that talks with the new coffee shop owners were still in progress and they had hopes of reaching an agreement that would allow the stall to continue operating at the same location. 

Owners previously denied closure rumours

When 8days.sg previously visited the stall on 22 September to investigate, an abrupt and busy Madam Mo denied the closure at the time: “Just renovating, renovating. Open till [the] last day of the month [on 30 Sept], renovations [begin] in October.” It appears she had also caught other media outlets off guard as they’d reported the same thing. Why deny it? Perhaps rental negotiations with the new landlords were still underway, or simply because the couple wanted to end their last days of business in peace. 

A heartfelt farewell 

An update on September 30 from the hawkers’ children on the stall’s Instagram account announced the stall’s closure: “We have ceased operations at our current location as of today. For decades, this stall has been a labour of love for my parents, faithfully weaving memories with all of you through every dish served. Now, it’s time to gently close this cherished chapter at this place.” 

It’s unclear if the eatery will reopen at a new location. 8days.sg reached out to the owners but have yet to receive a response.
