Foodie Friday: What The Stars Ate This Week (Sep 17-24)

What they ate: Cai fan

Yummy factor: The humble cai fan has been under the spotlight of late, thanks to talented music duo Annette Lee and Benjamin Kheng’s musical tribute to the Singaporean favourite. Siming met up with Ann and Ben at This One & That One Curry Rice stall to tapow cai png and find out more about their hit Mandarin pop song ‘The Caifan Song'. In case you're wondering, Ben had mala pork, steamed egg and potatoes, Ann ordered curry chicken (one of her go-to choices), fried lady's fingers, duck wings, while Siming opted for broccoli, eggplant and steamed egg.

What she ate: Hawker noms

Yummy factor: Ah Jie’s cycling trips often feature plenty of delish noms as a rewarding post-workout treat. This week, she made a pitstop for a hearty bowl of laksa and refreshing juice, and also managed to indulge in hearty lor mee with fried fish in Marine Parade.

What she ate: Nasi lemak

Yummy factor: Cynthia spent Monday afternoon queuing up for hawker fare — only because it’s "sedap" twice-steamed fluffy nasi lemak with tender beef rendang from hawker stall OG Lemak by Chef Shen Tan. And of course, what better way to enjoy nasi lemak than with delish sides like satay, otah, grilled wings and prawns?

What she ate: Lobsters

Yummy factor: Ivy, who is currently based in England, spent Saturday at the seaside town of Whistable where she indulged in a seafood feast. While her daughter Leah opted for a classic fish and chips at Lobster Shack, Ivy chose to go with a whole grilled lobster — with pincers still intact — along with fries and salad on the side. Seafood Saturdays should be a thing — what say you?

What they ate: HDB Tai Tai agar agar cake

Yummy factor: HDB Tai Tai is back after 10 years and hosts Kym and Liping celebrated the fourth season of popular variety show with a 3D agar agar cake featuring caricatures of themselves with their signature shades and handbags in front of HDB blocks. Too cute!

What they ate: Hae bee hiam dishes

Yummy factor: Nanxing is back with yet another F&B collab for his dried scallop hae bee hiam — this time with both White Restaurant and Vivian’s bubble tea brand, Teabrary. On the menu are dishes like crispy fried chicken, wok-fried di huang miao, and ikan bilis and chicken fried rice, as well as specially-concocted tea like strawberry green tea and lychee rose oolong tea from Teabrary.

What she ate: Japanese fine dining

Yummy factor: For Jacelyn, food should be served as fresh as possible, without much done to alter its original taste. That’s what she got at Shiraishi Japanese Restaurant, with the freshest sashimi and seafood. And pairing her food with an excellent whiskey is always a plus for her.

What he ate: Mooncakes

Yummy factor: Xu Bin couldn't be happier to spend Mid-Autumn Festival with his three-year-old son Ethan. And not only did they share slices of traditional baked mooncakes, the proud papa also showed off Ethan’s artwork from school — a homemade lantern made from recycled materials like a used water bottle.

What he ate: Chicken rice

Yummy factor: Although Golden Mile Complex is known for its Thai eateries, Thomas made a beeline for Golden Mile Thien Kee Steamboat to get his fix of Hainanese chicken rice instead. And he couldn’t look happier to have a plate of the succulent poached chicken and flavourful rice in hand.

What she ate: Taiwanese food from Goldleaf Restaurant

Yummy factor: After weeks of indulging in local food, it’s back to Taiwanese-style dishes for Yvonne and family — think a sumptuous spread of chye poh omelette (a must for her), golden seafood porridge, steamed sea bass, cereal prawns, braised pork belly, and more.

What she ate: Delish bakes

Yummy factor: Nurul received boxes of sweets and bakes like croissants, focaccia, and baguettes from bakery Maison Sucree, and although she only wanted to take a bite of each treat, she found it hard to resist the lemon meringue tart which was refreshingly tangy and sweet.

What she ate: Comfort food

Yummy factor: Sharon’s meal at popular French restaurant saw her indulging in comfort food, Parisian-style — a delicious red, pasta bolognese with ravioli parcels, as well as a generously-sized cote de veau (veal chop) with plenty of greens on the side to balance the meal. Yum.

What she ate: Malaysian nosh

Yummy factor: For Xiuhuan, few places get it right when it comes to KL-style Hokkien mee. So imagine her joy when she chanced upon a delicious rendition this week at 119 Fish Soup — noodles braised to perfection in dark sauce and with plenty of ingredients to boot. Of course, getting to enjoy it alongside tender poached chicken and steamed fish head was probably a plus.

What she ate: Piggy biscuits

Yummy factor: Forget fancy mooncakes for the Mid-Autumn Festival, nothing gets Ya Hui excited more than her childhood favourite — traditional piggy mooncake biscuits, especially when the sow-per cute hog comes with cute ribbon around its neck.

What she ate: Her fave eats

Yummy factor: Sonia had the best of both worlds and ordered in both Garibaldi’s pasta (look at the generous amount of sea urchin and scallops) and fresh burrata, as well as hearty fish soup from Jun Yuan House of Fish — both of which are Michelin-awarded establishments. It may not be your usual combo, but hey, it works.

What she ate: DIY sushi rolls

Yummy factor: Instead of heading out and jostling with crowds, Michelle and her family decided to stay home and have a DIY sushi-making sesh instead. And boy did they go all out, with their set-up featuring fancy ingredients like buttery uni and juicy caviar, scallop and salmon sashimi, and more.

What he ate: Lamb chop

Yummy factor: Although Siming found this pic too messy to post on his Instagram feed, all we’re really noticing is his smile and that delicious-looking lamb chop he’s holding on to. Of course, that grilled chicken with fries and coleslaw are making us hungry too.

What he ate: All things matcha from Gram Cafe & Pancakes

Yummy factor: From wobbly matcha souffle pancakes paired with chocolate soft serve made with Kit Kat, to rich ice-blended drinks topped with even more cream and matcha-flavoured Kit Kats, Kunhua may have just reached his sugar quota for the day. Safe to say, the YES 933 DJ is a huge fan of green tea.

What she ate: Salad and cakes

Yummy factor: Dawn’s lunch delivery consisted of a light salad lunch with avocado, prawns and a fried egg. While it sounds pretty yummy and guilt-free, she was probably looking forward to dessert (chocolate and carrot cake) from Cedele more. Who wouldn’t?

What he ate: Birthday treats

Yummy factor: A heart-shaped chocolate cake and ang ku kueh in huat hues of red and gold... the 987 DJ may have had a quiet 37th birthday (Sep 19) at home with his wife, but it was no less meaningful and lavish — just look at the decadent gold flakes on the cake. And we wonder if he used the Prada lunchbox he got as a present from fellow DJ Kimberly Wang to store the leftovers?
