Popular Puppy-Shaped Ice Cream Now Sold In Singapore — As A Cake
Forget Taiwan's ice cream pups, you can now get a realistic-looking chocolate pup cake in SG.
Realistic-looking puppy-shaped ice cream recently became all the rage in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, after a cafe called J.C. Co Art Kitchen there started selling gelato shaped like adorable Labradors, pugs and Shar Peis. And now, you can get them in Singapore too, but in cake form via a 10-month-old castella cake bakery called Nouveau in Bukit Panjang. It has started selling chocolate Shar Peis which look very similar to the ones sold in Taiwan. However, they appear to be made of chocolate mousse, instead of gelato.
Puppy love
Each tiny pooch measures about 12cm, and goes for a promotional price of $9.90 till this Sunday, after which it will cost $13 each. Nouveau bakery’s staff said over 10 puppies are sold daily.
Dog days
Nouveau offers only one dog breed — the Shar Pei. While their counter staff declined to divulge how the mousse-y puppies are made, reports have revealed the puppy-making process at the cafe in Taiwan. A gelato mixture is first poured into a puppy-shaped mould and frozen before being touched up with what appears to be food colouring. We scrutinised the puppies here and their little eyes and noses seem to be coated with a thin layer of chocolate.
Nouveau ad
We were pretty amused by the takeaway bakery’s adoption shelter-style poster promoting their puppy cake. Living in people’s tummies is also considered a good home, we guess? But we can’t bear to 'hurt' these cuties by cutting and eating them — even if they ain’t real. The video (see below) of a doggo being ‘beheaded’ on the bakery’s Facebook page is somewhat disturbing.
Piece of cake
Other than edible puppies, Nouveau also sells castella cakes in a variety of flavours like a pandan-infused Ondeh Ondeh, Green Tea with Red Bean and an interesting-sounding Honey Cheese Sea Salt Lava Cake.
