Doting Uncle Elvin Ng Just Created A Lovely Children’s Room For His Nephew & 2 Nieces

In a WhatsApp interview with 8days.sg, Elvin shared that he was “fully involved being the OCD and attention-to-detail Peh Peh (uncle)” in the planning of the room up until the execution stage, which is when he left everything to his brother and sister-in-law.

Aside from having complete trust in the interior design company, he thought he should let them have the responsibility and experience of building their own children’s room, although Elvin, who designed the whole house previously, did offer his advice.

According to Elvin, the whole family decided to do up a room like that as Nicole was entering Primary 1 and even the youngest, Reyner, was starting school, so it was time they had their own space as the kids previously slept in his brother’s room.

“So we converted one of the spare guestrooms into a children’s room with a colourful and fun theme to be their study area and playground where they can have fun childhood memories growing up,” he said.

It was no minor renovation, by the way. While Elvin’s brother originally just wanted to add a bunk bed to the room, the star suggested redoing the entire place.

“We decided to give the room a total reconfiguration and facelift, and even tore down the wardrobe and changed the fixtures,” he said.

In addition to the beds and wardrobe seen in the pics, there’s also a long writing desk with two seats and a whiteboard in the room. The closet is split into three parts so each kid has their own section, and the beds have “little reading cosy corners” and display shelves.

Naturally, the kids are “absolutely ecstatic” to have their own space, which Elvin “can tell from the sparkle in their eye when they speak about their room”.

While his eldest niece Nicole is supposed to have the top bunk, Elvin said she’s still afraid to sleep alone so she’s currently sharing the lower deck with her younger sister Arissa, while Reyner has his own bed beside the window.

“It’s nice when they say thank you to me for their room and own little wonderland,” Elvin gushed. “The funny thing is, when I asked Arissa what she liked most about the room, she said, ‘I like Peh Peh’s room!’ (Laughs)”

We don’t blame the girl for saying that.

After going through this remodelling project, Elvin has a valuable piece of advice for couples getting their first home, especially those who intend to start a family.

“For many newlyweds, I think sometimes when they get their first home, they think they probably won’t have kids so soon, so they don’t plan for a proper children’s room until they actually have one,” he said, adding that a few of his married friends, including Sheila Sim, have told him about this issue.

“Maybe I’d like to offer a bit of advice, which is, if they know they want children, leave a vacant space for a kids’ room or start building one that is more gender neutral in terms of colour or theme so there doesn’t have to be double work.”
