A new Japanese food enclave seems to pop up in Singapore almost every year. There was Suntec City’s Eat At Seven in 2015, Japan Food Town at Wisma Atria in 2016, Japan Gourmet Hall SORA at Changi Airport Terminal 2 in 2017 and the three-restaurant Yamato Izakaya at Oxley Bizhub last year. Gochi Church Street Japan Kitchen is the newest player in town. Two weeks ago, it launched six Japanese eateries (four of which are new-to-Singapore brands) at a 5,000 sq ft space in Capital Square. All the joints are brought in as franchises by Uptron, a Singaporean electronics and gaming company that’s the sole distributor for Sony PlayStation in Southeast Asia. Uptron’s director and chief operating officer Girish Tewani, 29, (his dad founded Uptron) who reintroduced Kobe confectionery and chocolatier Morozoff to Singapore in 2017, says he chose these six eateries because he felt they offered good Japanese food at an affordable price range. “We wanted to fill that mid-range gap in the market. There are plans to bring more new Japanese brands into Singapore, but I’m not at liberty to say which ones at the moment,” he shares.
