The F&B industry is a notoriously fickle world — what attracts a three-hour queue today could well become a struggling ghost town just one year later. After all, Singaporeans are spoilt for choice, with new eateries opening almost every month competing for their dollars and tummy space.

The competition is so fierce that, according to the Singapore Department of Statistics’ October 2019 report, the turnover rate for local F&B businesses “increased between 3.3% and 7.9% in October 2019 compared to October 2018”.

Some eateries are also forced out of business due to circumstances: McDonald’s popular outlet at Changi Airport’s Terminal 2 recently put up a notice of closure due to the terminal’s upcoming revamp. Character-themed joints such as Hello Kitty Orchid Garden, Gudetama and My Melody cafes shuttered when their license partnership with Sanrio ended.
